Serum Or Moisturiser First? The Right Order
Updated: Aug 11

Finding the correct skincare routine order can often feel like a guessing game, especially when you are trying to figure out whether to apply serum or moisturiser first. With so many skincare products on the market, it is easy to get confused, but mastering this step is essential if you want to achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin.
Serum or Moisturiser First?
Face serums are usually lighter and made to deliver active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or vitamin C straight onto clean skin. Hydrating moisturisers are generally thicker and designed to seal in hydration and support the skin barrier. Simply, serum treats and moisturiser seals.
If you apply moisturiser first, you can make it harder for your serum to sink in properly. That does not mean your skincare suddenly stops working, but it can mean you get less from a product you probably paid decent money for.
Why the order matters?
Think of product texture as your ultimate guide. The golden rule for your skincare routine order is to layer from thinnest to thickest consistency. A watery or gel-like face serum should always go on before a hydrating moisturiser. This allows the lighter formula to absorb fully before a richer, more occlusive layer sits on top. Following this order is also the most practical way to avoid skincare pilling. If you start layering heavier creams too early, your next product can roll, ball up, or simply leave a greasy residue. This is far from ideal if you want a clean, weightless finish rather than feeling like you are rubbing expensive products straight off your face.
When the rule changes?
Naturally, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If your face serum is unusually rich and your moisturiser is like a lightweight lotion, always follow the texture rather than the product label. The same applies if you have very dry skin or sensitive skin. Some people find that applying a thin layer of hydrating moisturiser first acts as a buffer for a strong active serum, making it much easier for the skin to tolerate. That said, this is very much the exception rather than standard skincare advice.
How to layer them properly?
Apply serum to clean, slightly damp skin if the formula allows it. Give it 30 seconds to a minute, then follow with moisturiser. You do not need to wait ten minutes between steps. That’s one of those beauty rules that sounds serious but mostly wastes time.
Use enough product to cover the skin, not so much that it sits there refusing to absorb. If your face feels sticky, you may be overdoing it.
My honest thoughts
For most people, serum first and moisturiser second is the right order. It is simple, it works, and it helps you get more out of your products. If your skin prefers a different approach, fine - but start with the standard order before reinventing the wheel.
