Why Is My Shampoo Not Working Anymore?

If you’re asking why is my shampoo not working, the annoying truth is that it’s often not the shampoo alone. Hair can suddenly feel greasy, flat, dry or oddly coated even when you’re using the same bottle you used to love. That usually means something around your routine has changed.
Why is my shampoo not working? Start with build-up
The most common reason is build-up. Dry shampoo, styling creams, oils and even some conditioners can leave residue behind, especially if you are not rinsing thoroughly. When that layer sits on the hair and scalp, shampoo struggles to clean properly, so your hair never feels fully fresh.
A clarifying shampoo can help, but not every wash needs to be a deep clean. If you use one too often, you can swing the other way and leave hair feeling stripped.
Your water might be the real problem
Hard water is a big one in many parts of the UK. Minerals in the water can cling to the hair, making it feel rough, dull or heavy no matter how decent your shampoo is. If your hair has gone strange after moving house or travelling, this is worth considering before binning your products.
In that case, the issue is less “bad shampoo” and more “wrong shampoo for the situation”.
A chelating or clarifying option used occasionally may do more than buying three random new bottles.
You may be using the wrong formula now
Hair changes. Weather, hormones, bleach, heat styling and even how often you wash can all shift what your hair needs. A shampoo that worked brilliantly six months ago might now be too rich, too harsh or simply not cleansing enough.
Application matters a lot
If you are piling shampoo onto the lengths first, using loads of product, or barely massaging the scalp, you might not be getting a proper cleanse. Shampoo is mainly for the scalp. The suds running through the rest of the hair are often enough.
Wash twice if your hair is very oily or full of styling product. The first wash breaks down grime, the second actually cleans.
When to give up on it
If you have clarified, rinsed properly, adjusted how you wash and your hair still feels wrong after a couple of weeks, the shampoo may just not suit you anymore.
If your scalp feels tight, itchy or greasy again by the next day, that is usually your cue to move on rather than forcing the bottle to work.
